English as an Additional Language

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

A vibrant EAL (English as an Additional Language) provision lies at the heart of our inclusive community at The Grange Primary School. We celebrate the rich diversity of our pupils, with over 30 languages spoken across our school — each one adding to the unique cultural tapestry that makes our learning environment so special.

Our EAL journey begins with rigorous assessment using the Bell Foundation’s framework to identify each child’s language strengths and individual areas for development.

From their very first day, pupils see their home languages and cultures celebrated through classroom displays, assemblies, workshops and our annual Multilingual Festival. We equip children to be proud of their heritage by sharing songs, stories, reading and writing activities, and by creating a bank of dual-language resources that both pupils and families can access.

We are also proud to run a Pen Pals Scheme in partnership with a school in another part of the country. This initiative connects pupils who share the same linguistic or cultural heritage, giving them the chance to build friendships, exchange experiences and celebrate their shared identity in a supportive, inclusive way.

Every initiative empowers EAL learners to take centre stage in their own language development. In doing so, we not only accelerate English fluency but also nurture confident, culturally aware young people who know that their first language is a treasured part of our school community.
