History

At The Grange Primary School, we believe that understanding the past enriches our pupils’ sense of identity, community and global citizenship. That’s why we use the Kapow Primary History scheme to deliver a coherent, skills-based curriculum from Reception through to Year 6.

A Skills-Driven, Enquiry-Based Journey
Kapow History is built around three core strands—ChronologyKnowledge & Interpretation and Historical Enquiry & Skills—so that children not only learn key facts and dates but also develop the historian’s toolkit: asking perceptive questions, evaluating sources and drawing reasoned conclusions. Each year group tackles a series of engaging, thematic units that build progressively on prior learning:

  • Early Years & KS1: Exploring personal histories, local landmarks and “Significant People” (e.g. Florence Nightingale and Grace Darling) to introduce basic sequencing and comparison skills.
  • Lower KS2: Diving into British history (Romans in Britain, The Stone Age to the Iron Age in Britain) alongside global studies (Ancient Egypt and Maya civilisation) to broaden contextual understanding.
  • Upper KS2: Tackling topics with greater depth—Anglo Saxons, The Tudors, World Wars and Local History—while sharpening source analysis (letters, diaries, photographs) and debating differing interpretations.

Active, Immersive Learning
Kapow lessons offer learning experiences through a range of storytelling, role-play, artefact handling and creative projects—such as building model aqueducts or staging a Tudor banquet drama—to bring history vividly to life. Our classrooms become “history labs,” where children handle replica and original artefacts, examine primary-source images and even conduct archaeological digs in the school grounds. This hands-on approach cements knowledge and fosters high-order thinking.

Assessment & Progression
Regular knowledge quizzes, reflection and recap sessions and group discussions ensure every child’s progress is visible and celebrated, guiding next steps and targeted support, enabling teachers to track skills development.

Connecting Home, School & Community
We extend learning beyond the classroom with museum visits, local walks and engagement in community events such as VE day.
