Geography

At The Grange Primary School, we believe that exploring the world around us sparks curiosity, fosters respect for diverse environments and prepares our pupils to be engaged global citizens. That’s why we follow the Kapow Primary Geography as a starting point for our teaching, to deliver a coherent, progressive curriculum from Reception through to Year 6.

A Skills-Driven, Enquiry-Based Curriculum

Geography is structured around four intertwined strands:

Locational Knowledge

Place Knowledge

Human & Physical Geography

Geographical Skills & Fieldwork, with this being supported by Climate and Sustainability.

Pupils not only learn where places are and what they’re like, but also develop the skills to investigate, analyse, and present geographical information whilst fostering an appreciation for the environment and world around them. Each year group follows a series of thematic units that build on prior learning:

  • Early Years & KS1: Investigating “My Local Area”, “Weather & Seasons,” and “Hot & Cold Places”, introducing simple map-reading, observational fieldwork and basic data-gathering.
  • Lower KS2: Broadening horizons with units on “Rivers & Coasts”, “Settlements”, and “Our Changing World”, developing skills in sketch mapping, using atlases and interpreting photographs.
  • Upper KS2: Tackling more complex enquiries – “Rainforests & Biomes”, “Population & Migration” and “Sustainability & Resources” – while honing grid-reference skills, GIS-style data analysis and formal report writing.

Climate and Sustainability

We have incorporated climate and sustainability education within our curriculum, with teaching supported by resources from Better Planet Schools. Pupils begin to understand how they can care for the planet – specifically by learning about climate change, recycling, and how to reduce their carbon footprint. Through exciting, hands-on learning experiences, pupils share ideas on how to support climate and sustainability, with the Geography Subject Reps becoming more involved in making our school more eco-friendly. From recycling to turning off lights, everyone is working together to help make a difference!

Active, Hands-On Learning

Lesson design blends discussion, model-making, map-work and outdoor investigations to enrich Geography teaching and learning. These practical activities cement knowledge, spark enquiry and teach pupils to collect, record and present real-world geographical data.

Assessment & Progression

End of unit assessments, reflection and recap starter activities and discussions ensure that every child’s learning is both visible and personalised. This ensures that achievements are celebrated, and next-steps can be identified to ensure progression is targeted and supported.

Connecting Home, School & Community

We enrich learning beyond the classroom with fieldwork opportunities, trips, virtual sessions and visits from Energy experts. For each trip out of school, our children complete pre-visit work, including completing their own risk assessment.
