French

In Key Stage 2, we proudly follow the Kapow Primary French scheme of work, a carefully sequenced programme that fully aligns with the National Curriculum for Languages and supports teachers to deliver high-quality French lessons that build confidence and competence in all pupils.

Our curriculum is designed to equip children with essential, transferable language-learning skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing that prepare them well for transition to secondary school. Each lesson develops pupils’ understanding of pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and cultural awareness through engaging, purposeful activities delivered in a structured, progressive way.

The Kapow scheme uses a spiral curriculum design, meaning key skills and vocabulary are revisited and extended over time, helping pupils to retain and build on their learning year after year. Lessons include clear learning outcomes and rich resources – including teacher support, pupil phoneme videos and intentional progression of knowledge and skills – so that every child can experience success in modern foreign language learning.

Assessment for learning is embedded throughout: teachers check understanding regularly through questioning, independent tasks and revisiting prior learning. End-of-unit outcomes give pupils the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned, allowing teachers to track progress, identify next steps and plan future lessons with confidence.

While French is our taught language in KS2, we also celebrate the rich linguistic diversity of our school community. We recognise and value the wide range of first languages spoken by our pupils, and language learning is further celebrated through Languages Day and opportunities for children to share and reflect on their own language knowledge and experiences alongside their French learning.

Our French curriculum aims not only to develop language skills, but also to foster curiosity, respect for other cultures, and confidence as communicators – laying a strong foundation for lifelong language learning.
