At The Grange Primary School, we believe that understanding technology and digital systems empowers our pupils to think creatively, solve problems and participate safely in an increasingly digital world. As technology becomes increasingly present in everyday life, computing is a natural and integral part of school life as well as the learning process, supporting and enhancing learning across the curriculum. We follow the Kapow Primary Computing curriculum as a starting point for our teaching, providing a coherent and progressive curriculum from Reception through to Year 6.
Knowledge and Skills Taught
- Computer Science
- Information Technology
- Digital Literacy
Our computing scheme Kapow further breaks these down into further threads; Computing Systems and Networks, Programming, Creating Media, Data Handling, Online Safety
Computing enables pupils to understand digital systems and apply computational thinking to a range of problems. Pupils develop skills in programming, data handling, and digital literacy, while learning to use technology responsibly. Each year group follows a series of thematic units designed to build coherently on prior learning.
Digital Leaders
Each year, Digital Leaders are selected from the Year 5 pupils and are trained by the current Digital Leaders to support both teachers and classmates with technology, including during computing lessons. These pupils develop a strong understanding of digital skills and become confident ambassadors for the subject. They are actively involved in discussions and decisions related to computing and also take responsibility for leading assemblies to share their knowledge with the wider school community.
Online Safety
At our school, online safety is a vital part of our curriculum and is taught through a carefully planned, age-appropriate programme that supports children as they grow in confidence and independence online.
We use Project Evolve to provide a comprehensive framework that develops pupils’ knowledge, skills, behaviours and attitudes across all areas of their online lives. From the early years through to secondary age, learning is clearly mapped to children’s development, ensuring key themes such as safe communication, online relationships and digital wellbeing are revisited and built upon over time. This approach helps pupils understand how to make safe, responsible choices when using technology.
To further strengthen our provision, we also work with Pol-Ed, whose expert-led lessons help pupils develop a strong awareness of personal safety, digital citizenship and the law. These sessions address important and relevant issues, including respectful behaviour, peer-on-peer abuse, and understanding the role of the police. Through this partnership, children are supported to recognise risks, seek help when needed and develop positive, respectful attitudes both online and offline.
Together, these programmes ensure our pupils are well equipped to navigate the online world safely, responsibly and confidently.
Computing Club
In Computing Club, children are given the opportunity to develop and strengthen their computing skills in a fun and practical way. Activities include coding using Scratch, programming Micro:bits, and working with LEGO® SPIKE. Pupils design and build a range of vehicles and models, then use specially designed motors and sensors to programme and control how they move. This hands-on approach encourages creativity, problem-solving and teamwork while helping children gain confidence in coding and technology.
