This year, our planned topics can be found below.

Autumn Term 1

Rampaging Romans

To support our topic, we have the following workshop planned:

  • VR workshop on Romans

In Maths, we will be focusing on place value, addition and subtraction, and times tables.

In English, our focus is diary entries. Our class story is ‘The Histronauts: A Roman Adventure’ by Frances Durkin. We will be using ‘Secrets of a Sun King’ by Emma Carroll and ‘Roman Diary – The Journal of Iliona A Roman Slave’ by Richard Platt. To support your child in becoming familiar with the structure of diary entries, please share a range and discuss these. For example:

  • Diary of a Killer Cat by Anne Fine
  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

Our PE day is Tuesday. Year 4 children are required to bring the correct PE kit, in line with school policy, to school each Monday and take home on a Friday.

Autumn Term 2

Food, Glorious Food!

To support our topic and writing unit, we have the following entry point planned:

  • Watching ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’.

In Maths, we will be focusing on addition and subtraction, measurement (area), multiplication and times tables.

In English, our focus is adventure stories. Our class story is ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl. To support your child in becoming familiar with the structure of adventure stories, please share a range and discuss these. For example:

  • The ‘Harry Potter’ series by J.K. Rowling
  • ‘Skellig’ by David Almond
  • ‘Who Let the Gods Out’ by Maz Evans
  • ‘Journey to the River Sea’ by Eva Ibbotson

Land, Sea and Sky

To support our topic and writing unit, we have the following trip planned:

  • Trip to Waters’ Edge in Barton

In Maths, we will be focusing on multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and times tables.

In English, our foci are tour scripts, performance poetry and narratives. Our class story is ‘Charlotte’s Web’ by E.B. White. Summer Term

High Voltage!

To support our topic, we have the following workshop planned:

  • Electricity workshop (teacher led)

In Maths, we will be focusing on place value, addition and subtraction, and times tables.

In English, our focus is biographies and myths. Our class story is ‘The Wizards of Once’ by Cressida Cowell. To support your child in becoming familiar with the structure of biographies, please share a range and discuss these. For example:

  • The ‘Little People, Big Dreams’ series
  • ‘Six Dots: A Story of Young Louis Braille’ by Jen Bryant
  • ‘Portrait of an Artist: Frida Kahlo’ by Lucy Brownridge
  • ‘Greta’s Story: The Schoolgirl Who Went On Strike To Save The Planet’ by Valentina Camerini

In June, Year 4 pupils will take part in the national times tables test – The Multiplication Tables Check. In Summer 2, Year 4 children will go swimming at the Pods in line with the National Curriculum. On these days, they are expected to bring swimming costumes, towels and goggles. They are also expected to bring the correct PE kit, in line with school policy, to school each Monday and take home on a Friday so that additional PE sessions can take place in school.

11 before 11

Our 11 before 11 experience is to visit a national landmark – The Humber Bridge. This will take place in Spring term.

 

Parents – how to support your child from home

Please help us in supporting your child with the following:

  • Read 3 times a week and record these in Home-School links books.
  • Complete homework on time (due on Mondays).
  • Ensure Home-School links books are in every day.
  • Ensure PE kit is brought to school on Mondays.
  • Discuss the world around you to improve vocabulary.
  • Practise time tables daily at home.
  • Share Year 4-level texts with your child, a list of which can be found at the following website: https://www.booksfortopics.com/booklists/recommended-reads/year-4/
  • Visit the local library with your child to borrow books from the suggested book lists.
