Topics

This year, our planned topics are:

Autumn Term 1

Land, Sea and Sky

Our topic is ‘Land, Sea and Sky’, which is focused on living things and their habitats. We will be delving deeper into how changes in the environment can affect these. We will be visiting The Waters’ Edge Country Park in Barton to enhance our learning in this topic.

In Maths, we will be focusing on Number, Place Value, Addition, Subtraction and Times Tables.

In English, our focus is poetry.

Our class story is ‘Please Mrs Butler’.

Our PE day is Monday and our focus is dance. Children should arrive at school in the correct PE Kit and stay in it all day. This must be a plain white t-shirt, black shorts/jogging bottoms and plimsolls/trainers.

In Art, we will be focusing on painting. Our artist of the half term will be Henri Rousseau.

In Design and Technology, we will be learning how to create a bridge to scale.

In Geography, we will look at rivers and how they are formed. We will learn how to use maps to locate places of interest in our local area.

 

Autumn Term 2

Food Glorious Food.

Our topic is Food Glorious Food, where we will be designing and making savoury dishes.

Our PE day is Thursday and our focus is gymnastics. Children should arrive at school in the correct PE Kit and stay in it all day. This must be a plain white t-shirt, black shorts/jogging bottoms and plimsolls/trainers.

In Maths, we will be focusing on Measurement, Multiplication, Division, and Times Tables.

In English, our focus is ‘Defeating the Enemy’ stories.

As part of STEM, we will be looking at the digestive system; we will be creating a 3D model using tights and food, to help us understand the journey of food in our bodies.

In Computing and Art, we will be creating digital flip books using animation and sound.

Our class story is ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl.

Our PE day is Tuesday. Children should arrive at school in the correct PE Kit and stay in it all day. This has changed since last year, due to new health and safety guidance.

Spring Term 1 & 2

High Voltage

Our topic is ‘High Voltage’, which is focused on electrical systems. We will learn to construct simple series circuits; explore common conductors and insulators and associate these with different metals and recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit. Linked to STEM, we will also learn how to create a battery using a lemon! In Design and Technology, we will be learning how to create a torch.

Our PE day in Spring 1 is Monday and our focus is Hockey
Our PE day in Spring 2 is Thursday and our focus is Netball
Children should arrive at school in the correct PE Kit and stay in it all day. This must be a plain white t-shirt, black shorts/jogging bottoms and plimsolls/trainers.

In Maths, we will be focusing on multiplication, division, area, fractions, decimals and times tables.

In English, we will be writing non-chronological reports in Spring 1 and then focusing on instruction writing in Spring 2.

Our class story is “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief“.

Summer Term 1

Rampaging Romans

Our topic is ‘Rampaging Romans’, where we will be learning all about the Romans and their legacy in Britain.

In PE we will be having swimming lessons at The Pods.
4C will have their lessons on a Wednesday afternoon.
4T will have their lessons on a Thursday afternoon.
Children will be expected to come to school in their school uniform, with their swimming kit in a bag with their name on.

In Maths, we will be focusing on decimals, money, time, statistics and times tables.

In English, our focus is writing recounts. This will be linked to our history topic, as we will be writing a recount of the day in the life of a Roman child.

In Science our focus is ‘Sound’, we will look at why and how we can hear things.

As part of our science unit, linked to History, we will be learning how to build a catapult!

Our class story is “Roman Invasion”.

Summer Term 2

Rampaging Romans

Our topic of ‘Rampaging Romans’ will continue, where we will be learning all about the Romans and their legacy in Britain.

In PE we will continue having swimming lessons at The Pods.
4C will still have their lessons on a Wednesday afternoon.
4T will still have their lessons on a Thursday afternoon.
Children will be expected to come to school in their school uniform, with their swimming kit in a bag with their name on.

In Maths, we will be focusing on shape; position and direction; and times tables.
All children will take the Statutory Multiplication Check, where they will be formally tested on the recall of their times tables knowledge up to 12×12.

In English, we will be writing a narrative based on ‘In search of a goal’.

In Art, our focus will be ‘collage’, where we will create collages with a range of different materials.

In Computing, we will become Hardware Investigators!

In French, we will be learning Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

In PSHE, we will be focusing on the topic ‘Changing Me’, where we will learn all about puberty, emotions and personal hygiene.

Parents – how to support your child from home

  • Please help us in supporting your child with the following:
  • Practising times tables through suggested routes on the MTC check letter.
  • Reading 5 times a week and recording these in Home-School links books.
  • Discussing the world around you to improve vocabulary.
  • Completing homework on time (due on Mondays).
  • Ensuring PE kit is in on Monday and left at school until Friday.
  • Ensuring Home-School links books are in every day.
