Topics

This year, our planned topics are:

Autumn Term 1

Land, Sea and Sky

Our topic is ‘Land, Sea and Sky’, which is focused on living things and their habitats. We will be delving deeper into how changes in the environment can affect these.

In Maths, we will be focusing on Number, Place Value, Addition, Subtraction and Times Tables.

In English, our focus is ‘Defeating the Enemy’ stories.

Our class story is ‘The Animals of Farthing Wood’ by Colin Dann.

Our PE day is Tuesday. Children should arrive at school in the correct PE Kit and stay in it all day. This has changed since last year, due to new health and safety guidance.

Our Music is going to be delivered by the North Lincolnshire Hub, who will be teaching us how to play the recorder.

In Design and Technology and Art, we will be learning how to create a digital flip book.

 

Barton Waters’ Edge

On Wednesday 4th September, Year 4 went to Barton Waters’ Edge to learn more about rivers, bridges, animals and their habitats ready for their topic on Land, Sea and Sky this half term. There, they sketched the Humber Bridge, observed different animals, explored different habitats and went on a wildlife hunt. The children’s brilliant behaviour was commented on by members of the public, who also enjoyed discussing with the children the purpose of the visit. Since the trip, the Year 4 pupils have been implementing what they discovered into their Science lessons and will continue to apply their learning next half term when they look at rivers in Geography.

Autumn Term 2

Food Glorious Food.

Our topic is “Food Glorious Food“, where we will be designing and making savoury dishes.

In Maths, we will be focusing on Subtraction, Measurement, Multiplication, Division, and Times Tables.

In English, our focus is non-chronological reports.
In Speaking and listening, our focus is persuasion.

Our class story is ‘George’s Marvellous medicine’ by Roald Dahl.

Our PE day is Tuesday. Children should arrive at school in the correct PE Kit and stay in it all day. This has changed since last year, due to new health and safety guidance.

Spring Term 1 & 2

High Voltage

Our topic is ‘High Voltage, which is focused on electrical systems. We will learn to construct simple series circuits; explore common conductors and insulators and associate these with different metals and recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit . Linked to STEM, we will also learn how to wire a plug!

In Maths, we will be focusing on multiplication, division, area, fractions, decimals and times tables.

In English, we will be writing instructions in Spring 1 and then focusing on writing sonnets in Spring 2.

Our class story is Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.

Our PE day is Thursday. Children should arrive at school in the correct PE Kit and stay in it all day. This has changed since last year, due to new health and safety guidance.

In Design and Technology, linking to our science unit, we will be learning how to create a torch. This will link to our STEM activity, where we will be designing and creating light up winter hats.

Summer Term 1

Rampaging Romans

Our topic is Rampaging Romans, where we will be learning all about the Romans and their legacy in Britain.

In Maths, we will be focusing on decimals, money, time, statistics and times tables.

In English, our focus is writing recounts. This will be linked to our history topic, as we will be writing a recount of a day in the life of a Roman child.

Our class story: Ancient Mythology Story Collection

In Science our focus is ‘Sound’. As part of our science unit, we will be creating a soundproof box (STEM project).

In Computing, we will become Hardware Investigators!

Summer Term 2

Our topic of Rampaging Romans will continue, where we will be learning all about the Romans and their legacy in Britain.

In Maths, we will be focusing on shape; position and direction; and times tables.

In English, we will be writing a narrative based on ‘being in search of a goal’.

We will continue reading more stories from the ‘Ancient Mythology Story Collection’ during class story time.

In Art, our focus will be collages.

In Design and Technology we will be designing and creating catapults!

Parents – how to support your child from home

  • Please help us in supporting your child with the following:
  • Practising times tables through suggested routes on the MTC check letter.
  • Reading 5 times a week and recording these in Home-School links books.
  • Discussing the world around you to improve vocabulary.
  • Completing homework on time (due on Mondays).
  • Ensuring PE kit is in on Monday and left at school until Friday.
  • Ensuring Home-School links books are in every day.
