This year, our topics planned are:

Autumn Term 1

Scavengers and Settlers

To support our topic, we have the following workshop planned:

  • Stone Age Workshop (teacher led)

In Maths, we will be focusing on place value, addition and subtraction, and times tables.

In English, our focus is ‘There and Back Again’ (portal) stories. Our class story is ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura. To support your child in becoming familiar with the structure of ‘There and Back Again’ stories, please share a range of portal stories and discuss these. For example:

  • ‘The Wizard of Oz’ by L. Frank Baum
  • ‘The Tunnel’ by Anthony Browne
  • ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll
  • ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C. S. Lewis
  • ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ by Enid Blyton
  • ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ by Maurice Sendak

Our PE day is Tuesday. Year 3 children are required to be in school, in the correct PE kit, in line with school policy.

Autumn Term 2

Living Together

To support our topic, we have the following visits and workshops planned:

  • Local walk
  • Church visit (COVID-dependent)
  • Library visit (COVID-dependent)

In Maths, we will be focusing on statistics, measurement (mass and capacity) and times tables.

In English, our focus is narrative texts (adventure). Our class stories are ‘The Secret of Black Rock’ Joe Todd-Stanton and ‘Poppy Field’ by Michael Morpurgo. We will be focusing on World War I and making savoury recipes.

To support your child in becoming familiar with narrative texts, please share a range of stories.

Spring Term

Active Planet

To support our topic, we have the following visit planned:

  • Active Planet Workshop (teacher led)
  • Shang Dynasty Workshop (teacher led)
  • Trip to the local mosque (COVID-dependent)

In Maths, we will be focusing on multiplication and division, measurement (money, length and perimeter), fractions and times tables.

In English, our focus is non-chronological reports and explanation texts. Our class stories will be ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Balit and we will be looking at ‘Earth-Shattering Events’ by Robin Jacobs and ‘The Street Beneath My Feet’ by Charlotte Guillian.

We will be celebrating poetry on World Poetry Day.

Let’s Plant it!

To support our topic, we have the following visit planned:

  • Trip to Sheffield Botanical Gardens

In Maths, we will be focusing on fractions, measurement (time), geometry (properties of shapes) and times tables.

In English, our focus is narrative texts – story and suspense. Our class story focus will be ‘James and the Giant Peach’ by Roald Dahl, ‘Star in the Jar’ by Sam Hay and ‘Wolves in the Walls’ by Neil Gaiman.

Our 11 before 11 experiences are visiting a botanical garden and the local library.

How to support your child from home

Please help us in supporting your child with the following:

  • Read 5 times a week and record these in Home-School links books.
  • Complete homework on time (due on Mondays).
  • Ensure Home-School links books are in every day.
  • Ensure PE kit is worn on the correct PE days.
  • Discuss the world around you to improve vocabulary.
  • Practise time tables daily at home (1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 8x and 10x tables in particular).
  • Share Year 3-level texts with your child, a list of which can be found at the following website: https://www.booksfortopics.com/year-3.
  • Visit the local library with your child to borrow books from the suggested book lists.
