Welcome to Year 1 Class 2

Class Information

Class Teacher: Mrs Rosser

Learning Assistants: Mrs Brown & Mrs Stenhouse

PE Day: Monday (subject to change termly – parents will be informed of any changes).

Additional activities known as brain breaks are used as part of the daily time table to keep children active and moving outside of their scheduled PE session.

PE is taught mainly by the Class Teacher. Some outside provision is also used during the school year.

Homework and reading: Homework and spellings are set every Friday in Year One to be returned by Thursday to be marked. Spellings are tested on a Friday.

The reading expectation is three times a week at home.

When all homework and three reads a week are completed every week for a whole term, children are eligible for ‘The Big Treat.

In Year One we cover poetry, narrative and non-fiction across the school year.

We reinforce and develop English skills through Grammar Hammer, Phonics sessions, Book Talk sessions, weekly spelling tests, speaking & listening activities and regular Talk for Reading sessions.

We link the English to our topic of study at the time as far as possible and use opportunities for applying English skills in topic lessons.

Phonics is an important part of Year 1. The children take the statutory Phonics Screening Test in the Summer term. This involves children taking part in an activity where they use their previously learned skills to decode real and ‘nonsense’ words (sometimes referred to as ‘alien’ words). This is a measure of children’s progress in phonics and reading. Please see the ‘useful links’ section of this page below for more information.
